Bohemian Style – Boho Style

Bohemian or Boho style is a personal, exotic and rule-breaking modern design style. The french term “Bohemien” comes with a long
folksy history from the 19th Century. “Bohemians” were considered unconventional and artistic gipsy-looking people who travelled around Europe from poorer countries.

Origins of Bohemian Style

The original term “Bohemians” is applied to people who live artistic and unconventional lifestyles: painters, actors and writers. Sometimes they were refugees or travellers coming from the region of Bohemia in Czech Republic. This counterculture appeared in France after the French Revolution. After that event a lot of artists plunged into poverty as a result of being deprived of the former system of patronage.

Today this style translated into Bohemian interiors, famous for elements like layered textures, vintage pieces, and natural finishes. It can also be called as boho chic” or “boho”. The Boho style mirrors the life by combining colors, objects and patterns from many areas of the world.

Decorative Materials

As the opposite of minimal, sleek and modern, Boho style embraces a “more is more” philosophy. The key to use decorative materials in a bohemian interior design is to mix and match. For example basic and natural materials like sisal and burlap can be combined with chenille and silk. The materials should have a worn, not shiny nor new look. Designers decorate rooms with fringe, “macramé” and crochet. Curtains, pillows and throw-rugs make a cozy, globally-inspired etnic space. The signature Boho embellishments are canopies over beds and living areas.

The furniture for a Bohemian style room is usually not easy to find in a store. This is why rooms tend to be filled with a vintage furniture collected over time and second-hand items. Each piece should be special and tell a little story. Designers add the Boho vibe with couches in saturated colors and plush chairs. Some overstuffed pillows on the floor will create a welcoming floor-seating atmosphere.

Bohemian Colors

Warm earthy colors, metallic and jewel tones are common in the design. Layering and combining colors is what makes this style unique. Designers mix patterns and textures and use styles that would not necessarily go together in a conventional way. Jewel tones like ruby red, emerald green and amethyst purple often display in a boho room. Deep hues in walls offer an instant luxurious feel while more daring colors like a bright blue resemble a «bazaar» look.

Spaces with white walls can also embrace the bohemian style vibe with the addition of particular patterns. Pattern options could be kilims, geometric South Western and ornate Persian styles.

Lighting and Accessories

The lighting setup will unify the Boho room and define a sense of calm and welcoming feel. Lanterns, candles and floor lamps would replace spotlights, ceiling lights and overhead fixtures.

The natural world is central: plants improve air quality and add an energetic quality to any room. The presence of greenery offers the connection to nature and rustic life.

A family heirlooms, different handmade items, tapestries, vintage bottles, maps and other etnic props will add that eclectic vibe to a Bohemian room. Art, sculptures, books, pillows, all participate in making the boho space feel cozy and inviting. The only rule is that every object in the room have to represent something personal about the owner.
