Louis Philippe Style (1830-1848)

The Louis Philippe took its name from the French king who reigned from 1830 to 1848. His reign saw this style become very popular.

Who Was Louis Philippe?

Louis Philippe reigned inFrance from 1830 to 1848. He was overthrown by the Revolution. Under Louis Philippe there was a fast development and improvement of the manufacturing. The reign of Louis-Philippe went on until the revolution of 1848, when the revolutionists forced him to go in exile.

About the Style

The Louis-Philippe style was featured with an interest for comfort and economy. This style, tried to satisfy who was looking for comfort, giving them a feeling of being socially legitimated.  It was less concerned with originality than it was with comfort and new methods of creation. We can also say that lines are massive.

These are the rooms in French houses of the time affected by this style:

Bedroom: the best-known signature piece from this style is the sleigh bed. The headboard is higher than the footboard, with curve lines of a sleigh. It is usually made of dark woods, and some contemporary beds are also available in blonde woods and even steel.

In the living room it was also possible to find several furnishings from this style:

  • Armchair: it was featured with a straight shape. Some models also had a pierced purchase that allowed to move them easily and often were carved with a flowers or volutes decorations.

  • Commode: it had a rectangular shape and few drawers. The top shelf was usually of marble.  Dark woods were important to this style: mahogany, ebony and walnut. Marble tops were usually gray, black or white.

  • The ornamental repertory was limited because of machine-assisted production tecniques. Bronze appliques and marquetry were not used and always inspired by previous styles: Louis XV style branches, for example.
