Ferruccio Laviani

Ferruccio Laviani is an Italian designer born in Cremona in 1960. His work began to arise in 1990 from the design and architectural movement of Memphis group.

Early Studies and the Opening of the Studio

Ferruccio Laviani, born in Cremona (Italy) in 1960, began his formative years studying at the International Professional Institute of Art and Crafts in Cremona, where he graduated in 1978. He later attended the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico in Milan – where he received his degree in 1986 – while also attending at the same time the Scuola Politecnica di Design, in Milan, from 1982 to 1984.

In 1983 he started working for Michele De Lucchi. They became partners in 1986 until 1991, when Laviani decides to open his own studio in Milan.

The Lighting Design

Laviani’s work mainly focuses on Product Design, Interior Design, art direction and graphics.

He is mostly known for the manufacturing of industrial design objects, especially lamps and lighting systems, which are realized employing clear and coloured plastic materials.

One of his best known lightning designs is probably the Bourgie Lamp, inspired by the Baroque Style and realised in transparent polycarbonate, it was commercialised in 2004 by Kartell.

Since 1991 Ferruccio Lavian has been the Art Director for Kartell; he has covered the same role for companies the like of Flos, De Padova, Foscarini, Moroso, Society (Limonta), Emmemobili. He designs retail spaces, set-ups, offices, and houses for privates, as well as furniture. Among his clients, there are brands like Cassina, Dolce& Gabbana, Dada, Molteni & C., Barovier & Toso, Piper, Heidsieck, Missoni, Citroen, Hansgrohe, Martini e Rossi, Swarovski, Veuve Cliquot, Moët Hennessy, Marazzi Group, La Rinascente, Zara, Habitat, and Samsung.

Laviani’s Achievements and Exhibitions

In 2008 an exhibition was dedicated to the lamps he designed for Kartell and was set up at Metropol Dolce & Gabbana space in Milan. Bourgie and Take lamps designed for Kartell are part of the permanent Collection of IMA, Indianapolis Museum of Art (USA), and many of his products have been featured in museums and shows all over the world.
