Qui étaient les Shakers?
La communauté Shaker a commencé à Liverpool dans les années 1700 par Anne Lee, une femme qui est allé en mission pour trouver une religion plus spirituelle que l’Église d’Angleterre. En 1744, la communauté a dit à l’Amérique d’éviter la persécution religieuse pour être non-conformistes. Une fois là, ils ont conçu de grands bâtiments pour des groupes de personnes, où le minimalisme était la principale caractéristique de leur architecture.

Architecture du Style Shaker
Les Shakers étaient célèbres pour leur architecture et leur artisanat. Ils ont travaillé pour servir Dieu dans tout ce qu’ils faisaient. Leur architecture met l’accent sur la simplicité, l’utilité et l’artisanat. En outre, le travail des Shakers axé sur des lignes simples et des matériaux durables. Le moulage en bois a été utilisé pour façonner les fenêtres et les portes, mais il n’a pas changé la sensation générale de simplicité.

Mobilier du style Shaker

Les meubles étaient souvent faits de cerisier ou d’érable parfois taché. Heureusement, les collections de meubles Shaker sont maintenues aujourd’hui aux États-Unis et au Royaume-Uni. De plus, des éléments du design Shaker ont inspiré de nombreux meubles modernes.

Artistes Importants
Tabitha Babbit (1784-1858): on ne sait pas grand-chose de Tabitha Babbitt, mais elle vivait dans la communauté Shaker de Harvard dans le Massachusetts. Elle est devenue une outilleuse américaine Shaker et, probablement, conçu la scie circulaire.

Isaac Newton Youngs (1793 – 1865): il a été un Shaker, il a conçu des meubles, transcrit des hymnes à la main, amélioré les ouvrages hydrauliques de son village, travaillé sur la maison de la famille de l’église, tourné plus d’un millier d’épingles à linge sur un tour, et a posé un nouveau plancher dans la laiterie.
