Social Changes Influenced Art

It can be said for each decade of our past years ad it is in some way more important in the Sixties: America was changing. New ideas were spreading. Rebellious thoughts and anti-system thoughts were climbing to the mainstream. Culture was rich and varied and many problems in sexism and racism were emerging to be discussed and addressed.

The emblematic design features of the 1960s are:

Op Art

Op Art is a movement born in the 1960s. It is a distinct style of art that wants to createa sense of illusion of movement in the viewer. Through the employement of precision and mathematics, contrasts, and abstract forms, these new pieces of art have a three-dimensional perspective that is not used in other styles of art. After the major 1965 exhibition of Op Art named “The Responsive Eye”, the fan became engaged with the movement. As a result Op Art was everywhere.

American Pop Art

American pop art started after a few years after its British counterpart. One of the biggest differences between British pop art and American pop art was that British one was interested more in light-hearted tones and often tended to include humor. American pop art, on the contrary, was the result of the incessant marketing that Americans weresubjected to. It tended to be more serious and dramatic.

Jasper Johns, after moving to New York City to look for a career as an artist, he became famous in the 1950s for his paintings of flags, targets and other ordinary goods. In 1954, Johns had a dream in which he was working at an American flag. This inspired him to create “Flag”, a painting in encaustic, a technique that employed pigments fused with melted wax.
